  3. generation that has to be with  everything and has to dig  things 
  4. in order to get at them. So avid is the TV viewer for rich tactile 
  5. effects that he could be counted on to revert to skis. The 
  6. wheel, so far as he is concerned, lacks the requisite 
  7. abrasiveness.

  9.      Clothes in this first TV decade repeat the same story as 
  10. vehicles. The revolution was heralded by bobby-soxers who 
  11. dumped the whole cargo of visual effects for a set of tactile 
  12. ones so extreme as to create a dead level of flat-footed 
  13. deadpanism. Part of the cool dimension of TV is the cool, 
  14. deadpan mug that came in with the teenager. Adolescence, in 
  15. the age of hot media, of radio and movie, and of the ancient 
  16. book, had been a time of fresh, eager, and expressive
